Donald Trump was seen at a LIV Golf party in New York City on Wednesday night. The league's tournament starts on Thursday at his New Jersey golf course.
The former president was seen in the crowd at Midtown's Gotham Hall. He was wearing a suit and shirt but not his signature red tie. He was shaking hands with Caitlyn Jenner and smiling with his wife Melania Trump.
Trump took part in the celebrations even though he was supposed to play golf on Thursday with professional golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson in the pro-am before the first round of this week's LIV Golf Invitational at his Trump National Golf Course in Bedminster, New Jersey.
Johnson and his wife Paulina Gretsky, as well as "The Shark" Greg Norman, CEO of LIV Golf Investments and a former pro golfer, were also at the party on Wednesday night.
People are upset that LIV Golf works with the Saudi Arabian government because there have been reports of human rights abuses in the country. The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Funds pay for the company that runs the tour. The tour started as an alternative to the PGA Tour, which is based in the US.
Critics have said that Saudi Arabia's involvement with LIV Golf and other sports is a "sportswash" for the bad things it does to people's rights.
Families of 9/11 victims have also said bad things about the circuit, especially since the tournament will be held less than 50 miles from where the twin towers used to be.
Fifteen of the 19 terrorists who attacked on September 11, 2001, were from Saudi Arabia. Last year, the FBI released hundreds of pages of newly declassified documents that looked into the link between the Saudi government and the attacks.
Still, in the past few days, Trump has brushed off concerns about human rights in Saudi Arabia and criticized the PGA Tour for banning players who play in LIV Golf from its tournament.
Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, "All of those golfers who stay "loyal" to the very unloyal PGA in all of its different forms will pay a big price when the inevitable MERGER with LIV happens."
This week, the winner of the LIV Golf Invitational Series will get $4 million from a purse of $25 million.
