“Outcry” docuseries director Pat Kondelis says interviewing Greg Kelley — who was sentenced to 25 years behind bars for sexually assaulting a child and later exonerated — was very difficult and challenging.

“The first time I met him he was in prison,” Kondelis said during ATX TV…from the Couch. “It was a difficult interview to first meet him in that setting and then to go through all the things that we had to go through.”

He added, “It was challenging, very, very challenging because at that point we didn’t know what was going to happen with the case, he didn’t know what was going to happen with the case, but he had been in prison for just about three years at that point and was very eager to get his side of the story out.”

Kelley, a one-time high school football star, was accused in 2013 of sexually assaulting a 4-year-old boy at an in-home daycare center. One year later, he was found guilty and sentenced to 25 years in prison without the possibility of parole.

Kondelis admitted his very first impression of Kelley when they first met was that he was physically much bigger than he was expecting him to be.

“What impressed me right away was that I asked him some very, very difficult questions and he did not shy away from those questions at all,” the filmmaker continued. “Sitting there in prison, with cameras on you, with somebody you’ve never really met before, asking you very intimate questions, I was impressed with the way that he handled himself and how honest he was.”

The five-part documentary premieres on Showtime on July 5.
