The annual ATX TV Festival, which takes place every June in Austin, Texas, is going virtual for 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Organizers announced Monday that amid an “incredibly challenging” few weeks filled with “uncertainties,” the festival would keep its June 5-7 schedule but move the programming online instead of in person. It is unclear if previously announced panels — including one with the cast of “Scrubs” — will be part of the festival now.
“Perhaps now more than ever, we believe that TV is a powerful medium for change and empathy,” co-founders Caitlin McFarland and Emily Gipson said in a statement. “We are committed to our mission of fully serving and fostering our community at all times. For this reason, and to ensure the ongoing safety of all, this year we will not be having a physical festival in Austin, but instead we will be celebrating television where we all enjoy it, the couch!”
In February, the festival announced that the cast of “Scrubs,” including Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, John C. McGinley, Judy Reyes, Neil Flynn and Christa Miller, would be reuniting, as well as several cast members from “Cougar Town.”
Peter Krause, Lauren Graham, Monica Potter, Erika Christensen, Mae Whitman and Craig T. Nelson were also set for a “Parenthood” reunion at this year’s ninth festival. Shows including “Nancy Drew,” “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” “The Other Two” and “Drunk History” were also slated for events at the festival.
Of this year’s rejiggered programming, the co-founders said, “We are confident we can continue to have great conversations, showcase new and old favorite series, and interact with our incredible community … with a lot of fun surprises along the way.”
The 10th edition of the festival is set to head back to Texas from June 10-13, 2021, the co-founders said.
