“The Good Lord Bird” author James McBride praised the young people who are out protesting and standing up for Black Lives Matter.

“The most heartening about what these people are doing today, in these difficult moments, is that they are sacrificing almost everything so that we can talk about these issues in real ways and that’s something that my generation was not able to do,” the 62-year-old said during a pre-recorded ATX TV…from the Couch panel on Saturday.

McBride, who is also an executive producer on the upcoming Showtime series about abolitionist John Brown, added, “Some of us could, but we couldn’t do it in the widespread way that these young people do.”

He went on to say that they are at the point in the discourse where “white people are no longer overcome with guilt so they can’t talk about these areas cleanly.

“We’ve reached the point now where the discourse has reached that sort of 2 o’clock in the morning college rap session-level in a much more widespread way than I’ve ever seen in my life.”

“The Good Lord Bird,” which stars Ethan Hawke and Joshua Caleb Johnson, premieres on Showtime on Aug. 9.
