Aisha Dee says her “Bold Type” co-stars Katie Stevens and Meghann Fahy have been very supportive after a “difficult and emotional week,” amid the ongoing protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death.
“They were both there for me in ways that obviously I knew I could expect because they’re my people, but it really, really touched me,” the 26-year-old biracial actress told Page Six during the ATX TV…from the Couch festival.
She added, “To have them available, even if it is to listen, really meant a lot to me.”
Dee also explained that when it came to doing press for the virtual festival over the weekend, they left the ball in her court.
“I decided that now is the time to hopefully use this platform to amplify the voices of other people fighting for the liberation of black people and fighting for Black Lives Matter and hopefully we can use that as a tool to shine a brighter light on it,” Dee said, advising that people should look to the activists and organizers and amplify their voices.
“The Bold Type,” which is airing six more episodes of the fourth season on Freeform, was shut down earlier this year due to the coronavirus crisis.
“It’s so weird to go from living out of each others pockets, seeing nothing but each other, living in this kind of ‘Bold Type’ bubble for nine months and then to all of a sudden be ripped out of that,” Dee said of her, Stevens and Fahy quickly leaving Canada in the middle of filming. “We didn’t have very much warning.
“It was like, ‘OK, get on a plane tomorrow, pack up your apartment,’ and the last night, we just ate all of the food in the house and drank all of the wine and hugged. At the airport, Katie almost missed her plane because we were all just commiserating together over a bowl of sweet potato fries. Luckily, we have Zoom and FaceTime to always be connected. I don’t really know what I would do if I couldn’t keep up to date with them.”
As for the series, which picks up after Dee’s character Kat has been fired from Scarlet magazine, she says she hopes in the future Kat leans into her activism.
“I kind of love that she got fired,” Dee laughed. “I want her to thrive so much because I love this fictional person that I’ve been living alongside of for a few years now.”
