During a panel for “Sherman’s Showcase,” executive producer John Legend said it’s important to keep creating joyful content amid the important Black Lives Matter protests happening across the country.

“We still have our sense of humor,” Legend said during ATX TV…from the Couch on Saturday when the moderator asked about conflicting feelings when creating silly content right now. “We still think there’s a lot in the world to talk about and make fun of and there’s a lot of joy we can share with other people and I think it’s important to continue to share that joy, that laughter with intelligence and with an eye to what’s going on in the world, but people still need to laugh and enjoy themselves.”

He added, “I think it’s important that we show the fullness of what it is to be black and human. Through our art, we are able to that.”

“Sherman’s Showcase” creator Diallo Riddle added that it’s something he thinks about on a daily basis.

“I think it’s a really weird place right now, where you do wonder like, ‘Is it OK to be silly? Is it OK to laugh?’” Riddle said. “I think people need those moments of levity, those moments to laugh, to dance, to do the things that we love so that you can actually recharge that battery.”

Adding that you do always have to be sensitive to what’s happening in the world, Riddle said, “I just always come back to the fact that what’s gotten our people through the past and the present has always been our culture, you know, the music, the comedy and the ‘black boy joy,’ to use the nomenclature of the current day, we have to keep that going.”

“Sherman’s Showcase: Black History Month Spectacular” airs on AMC and IFC on June 19.
