On Saturday afternoon, a French woman was bitten by a shark off the coast of Maui.
According to a Maui County press release, cops responded to the beach area of Pia Bay on the island's north shore around 4:09 p.m. local time.
When cops arrived on the scene, they discovered that bystanders had already pulled the 51-year-old to shore and were treating her wounds until medical and fire services arrived.
Before the event, the victim was apparently observed swimming and possibly snorkeling in murky water around 100 yards from shore.
In critical condition, she was rushed to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The bite inquiry is still ongoing.
The Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement of the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) also reacted, according to Maui Now.
Following the event, Maui County closed three north-shore beaches until Sunday, and staff from the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources and Maui Ocean Safety officials posted shark warning signs on either side of Pia Bay.
