While many industries are reckoning with racial discrimination and representation, Black leaders in fashion are coming together to spark change from within.
Stylists Law Roach and Jason Rembert have teamed up with hairstylist Lacy Redway to form the Black Fashion & Beauty Collective (BFB Collective) with designers, hair stylists, photographers and more creatives.
The not-for-profit organization is “committed to directly influencing progression within the fashion and beauty industries and the Black community,” according to their newly-established website.
The BFB Collective plans to create initiatives in collaboration designers, production companies and more to “focus on creating education and career advancement opportunities for aspiring creatives, developing industry diversification standards for brands and corporations, providing resources to support members with their professional goals and fostering community engagement and support,” according to the site.
“Our plans have always been to form a community of us, of voices that are very influential in the industry and can really see change happen,” Redway, whose clients include Tessa Thompson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Zazie Beetz, told Footwear News. “We were just really fed up with not having proper representation in so many areas in our industries, and we were all fighting similar fights but fighting them individually.”
They will also be fundraising for Black Fashion and Beauty Business Relief Fund and partnering with the nonprofit My Block, My Hood, My City to provide immediate financial support to businesses impacted by recent protests, looting and coronavirus shut down.
Roach himself has pledged an initial $25,000 to Rebuild the Hood, with a focus on effected businesses in the Chicago area, and others have followed suit, Jameela Jamil donated $10,000 while Christian Siriano offered $1,000.
