According to court documents, Hunter Biden wants to get his child support payments for his 4-year-old love child lowered by saying that his 'financial circumstances' have changed in a big way.
In a court filing from Monday, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette learned that Joe Biden Jr., who is 52 years old, pays child support to Lunden Roberts, 31, who is the mother of the daughter he has never met.
Hunter said that his "financial circumstances, including but not limited to his income," had changed in a way that was "substantial and material." This was the reason for his request.
It wasn't clear right away how Hunter's income had changed.
Brent Langdon, his lawyer in Texas who signed the motion, said that Hunter wanted to review his payments because the rules for child support in Arkansas will change in 2020.
“Like many other individuals whose child support obligations were calculated before the new guidelines took effect, Mr. Biden has asked the court to review the existing child support determination and to establish an amount of child support that complies with the current guidelines and circumstances,” Langdon said in a statement.
Hunter filed his motion in Independence County, where Roberts, a former stripper, and their daughter Navy Joan live.
Clint Lancaster, Roberts's lawyer, was quick to say that he didn't believe Hunter was rich and promised to look into his financial records.
“Ultimately, this is going to require us to look deeply, more deeply, into Hunter’s finances,” Lancaster said. “I’m going to want to have a deposition with Mr. Biden. Like last time, I’m going to bring my forensic accountant to the deposition, unless the judge tells me I can’t.”
He added: “Unless he’s going to pay me to fly to California to take his deposition, he’s going to have to come to Arkansas.”
Hunter says he is having money problems after putting out a tell-all book about his drug- and sex-filled past in April of last year.
The first son also started selling his own paintings. Before they were shown in a New York City gallery, he sold at least five of them for $75,000 each.
Still, this isn't the first time Hunter has tried to show Roberts that he doesn't have enough money to pay child support.
Roberts filed a paternity suit against Hunter in 2019. In an affidavit, Hunter said that he was broke and couldn't pay child support because he was "significantly in debt" from his divorce with Kathleen, with whom he has three children.
“I attest that I am unemployed and have had no monthly income since May 2019,” Hunter wrote.
Hunter at first said he had never had sex with Roberts, but they later settled out of court after a DNA test proved the child was his.
The first order for child support was then filed under seal in March 2020. Just four months later, it was changed. It's not clear what was changed.
When Roberts worked at a strip club in Washington, DC, Hunter was seeing Hallie Biden, who was married to Hunter's older brother Beau.
Hunter married his second wife, Melissa Cohen, just a few weeks after he and Hallie broke up. In March 2020, Beau Biden Jr. was born to the couple.
The fight over child support is happening at the same time that federal investigators are still looking into what Hunter did with his money and business when his father was vice president.
Because Hunter had access to good ways to make money, text messages found on his famous laptop showed that he often paid for family expenses and gave as much as half of what he made to his father.
“I hope you all can do what I did and pay for everything for this entire family for 30 years,” Hunter raged to his daughter Naomi in January 2019. “It’s really hard. But don’t worry, unlike pop, I won’t make you give me half your salary,” he added in reference to his father.
The laptop doesn't have any direct proof of these kinds of money transfers, but it does show that he was often responsible for household costs, like fixing up Biden's house in Wilmington, Del.
