Ethereum co-founder said Facebook's Metaverse will fail

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, believes that attempts by corporations to construct the metaverse would fail.

  • Vitalik Buterin has stated that attempts by corporations to create a Metaverse would fail.
  • Buterin explicitly stated that Facebook's metaverse will "fail."
  • Since changing its name to Meta, Facebook has concentrated on establishing the metaverse.

Buterin stated this in response to Dean Eigenmann's statement that "although the concepts on the metaverse concept make logic, he does not believe it will occur with Venture Capital investment."

Eigenmann remarked, "I'd rather hang around in World of Warcraft than in half of this "metaverse" garbage."

In response, Vitalik tweeted, "The "metaverse" will occur, but I don't believe any of the current corporate initiatives to purposely construct it will succeed."

Buterin asserts that Facebook's Metaverse will fail.

After redesigning its whole business around the idea, Facebook's parent company Meta now leads corporate interest in developing the metaverse.

But Vitalik does not believe the firm will benefit from the change. He referred to the organization, claiming, "Anything Facebook develops now will fail."

Buterin, one of the most well-known personalities in the cryptocurrency industry, has recently been one of the most outspoken, providing criticism on matters ranging from Plan B's S2F model to the proliferation of NFTs.

However, this is one of the rare occasions Buterin would mention the metaverse, with some members of the community sharing his perspective.

The notion and development of Augmented and Virtual Reality technologies on the blockchain has dominated the metaverse. However, the concept of metaverse remains ambiguous.

Corporate Entities inside the Metaverse

In addition to the relative success of crypto initiatives like The Sandbox and Decentraland, many organizations have adopted the metaverse concept as part of their growth strategies.

In the virtual arena, fashion firms such as Adidas and beer manufacturers such as Budweiser have developed NFTs and staged events.

Facebook has more than increased its metaverse efforts to maintain its leadership position in the field.

Reality Labs, the company's metaverse division, incurred a $2.8 billion loss in the second quarter of 2022, according to a recent report.

Even while this may illustrate Buterin's claim, Mark Zuckerberg remains focused on long-term profits.

According to him,

Developing these [metaverse] platforms could unlock hundreds of billions if not trillions in revenue over time.
