Trevor Lawrence, the expected No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft who experts have labeled the best quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck, is setting the record straight.
The former Clemson star and future face of the Jaguars took to Twitter amid criticism from a Sports Illustrated article in which he gave quotes that made some question his motivation for football.
“I am internally motivated — I love football as much or more than anyone. It is a HUGE priority in my life, obviously. I am driven to be the best I can be, and to maximize my potential. And to WIN,” Lawrence wrote in the first of three tweets.
In another tweet, Lawrence wrote that he didn’t need football to make him feel “worthy as a person,” while also writing that he loves everything about the game.
Lawrence felt the need to clarify some things he told Sports Illustrated.
“It’s not like I need [football] for my life to be OK” Lawrence said in the S.I. story. “I want to do it because I want to be the best I can be. I want to maximize my potential. Who wouldn’t want to? You kind of waste it if you don’t.”
“It’s hard to explain that because I want people to know that I’m passionate about what I do and it’s really important to me, but … I don’t have this huge chip on my shoulder, that everyone’s out to get me and I’m trying to prove everybody wrong,” he told Sports Illustrated. “I just don’t have that. I can’t manufacture that. I don’t want to.”
That led to some critics questioning Lawrence’s devotion, under the assumption top players are supposed to live and breathe the sport. But Lawrence wanted to make it clear that isn’t an issue.
“I have a lot of confidence in my work ethic, I love to grind and to chase my goals. You can ask anyone who has been in my life,” Lawrence tweeted. “That being said, I am secure in who I am, and what I believe.”
