Deivi Garcia has ‘so many’ questions after talking to idol Pedro Martinez

Yankees rookie hurler Deivi Garcia likely lived out his childhood dream when he received a call from his idol Pedro Martinez after his MLB debut on Aug. 30.

Garcia held the Mets to one unearned run over six innings in a no-decision, and Martinez took to Twitter to commend the 21-year-old on his “excellent” outing. Both are Dominicans and Garcia has No. 45, the number Martinez wore for most his Hall of Fame career, on the inside of his belt.

So when Martinez called to offer his congratulations, Garcia could only think of how many questions he wanted to ask.

“We talked after (my first game),” Garcia said Sunday before the Yankees’ 3-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles, per NJ.com. “That was great. But I have so many different questions I would love to ask him. Like, how do you plan executing? And do you carry that plan over the game? There’s so many different questions I would love to ask.”

Garcia has posted a 1-1 record and a 3.06 ERA with 18 strikeouts and two walks in three starts so far this shortened season. His first win came in his last outing Wednesday in Buffalo as he played a key role in ending the Yankees’ five-game losing streak that has suddenly turned around into an ongoing five-game winning streak.

Although he hasn’t had another chance to pick Martinez’s brain yet, Garcia has been soaking up all he can from his coaches and teammates in his first two weeks in the MLB.

“Every experience is unique, and you learn from those,” Garcia said. “I learn from my teammates. How do they go about their responsibilities on and off the field, the professionalism as baseball players and the preparation? Building a plan to face a team … What goes into that? How do you prepare for that?

“They’re very important for me as a player, just the experience itself and gaining as much as I can.”
