Ronan Farrow is defending his Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting after former Buzzfeed editor Ben Smith, now a media columnist at the New York Times, panned his work.
In a column titled “Is Ronan Farrow too good to be true?” published Sunday, Smith levied accusations at both Farrow’s work on President Donald Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen and his 2019 book “Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators.”
Responding to the column on Twitter Monday afternoon, Farrow first mentioned a thread by New Yorker editor Michael Luo that addresses several of the supposed inconsistencies Smith pointed out in his column. (Farrow took his reporting on Weinstein to the New Yorker after, he, alleges, NBC refused to publish them.) “We are proud of @ronanfarrow ’s reporting, and we stand by it,” Luo concluded.
Then, in his own thread — which Smith retweeted — Farrow, 32, offered several rebuttals of Smith’s critiques, before concluding, “I stand by my reporting.”
Smith’s piece, while admitting that while Farrow “is not a fabulist,” charged that the younger journalist “delivers narratives that are irresistibly cinematic — with unmistakable heroes and villains … [and] often omits the complicating facts and inconvenient details that may make them less dramatic.”
