The Cowboys are still dancing with Dak Prescott, but they won’t leave him at the altar.
After slapping the franchise tag on their Pro Bowl quarterback, the Cowboys have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal with Prescott. But even if they can’t come to an agreement by then, the Cowboys don’t have any plans to go to the extreme and rescind the franchise tender, an option they have until Prescott signs it.
“Absolutely not,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said on Friday’s #PFTPM podcast. “Dak’s our quarterback for the future. Obviously, this hasn’t been the easiest thing. As Jerry [Jones] says, ‘As money gets bigger, deals get harder.’ Certainly, we’re talking a significant amount of money here which he so deserves. Absolutely not. Dak’s going to be our quarterback this year. He’s our quarterback for the future. We think the world of him. He represents our franchise in a very positive way in terms of what we want as a leader of our team. He’s just an outstanding man, and we would never rescind the franchise tag.”
The Cowboys recently signed former Bengals starter Andy Dalton to be their backup, though he could be of use if Prescott tries to hold out of training camp — assuming there is one amid the coronavirus.
If and when Prescott eventually signs the franchise tag, it would set his 2020 salary at $31.4 million.
The 26-year-old Prescott reportedly wants a four-year deal while the Cowboys want to lock him in for an extra fifth year.
