The Bengals released the veteran quarterback on Thursday morning, ESPN.com reported. It adds another layer of intrigue to the free-agency quarterback market, particularly as it pertains to the Patriots. New England has been oddly content with their quarterback situation — and a depth chart topped by second-year QB Jarrett Stidham — since Tom Brady left the franchise after two decades for a two-year, $50 million deal with the Buccaneers.

The Bengals had been looking to trade Dalton this offseason with the inevitability, which became reality on Thursday night, they were drafting LSU star Joe Burrow. Cam Newton is the other high-profile quarterback left standing in free agency, though the Patriots have yet to show any interest in the 2015 MVP.

Dalton, 32, has been the steady hand of the franchise for the past decade, starting at least 11 games every season since 2011. The former second-round pick has thrown for 31,594 yards in his career with 204 touchdowns compared to 118 interceptions.
