Patriots fans are finding out how the rest of the NFL die-hards live.

After two decades of stability with Tom Brady at the most important position in the sports, the Patriots are now trying to figure out who their their next franchise quarterback will be.

Spoiler alert: It won’t be Brian Hoyer — the 34-year-old journeyman the Patriots signed last week to a one-year deal after Brady took his talents to Tampa Bay. New England does have Jarrett Stidham entering his second year and the team does appear somewhat high on the fourth-round pick from the 2019 NFL Draft. But no one could consider Stidham, 23, a lock as a future star after he threw four passes in mop-up duty behind Brady a year ago.

The focus of the Patriots fans’ quarterback dreams seems to be Deshaun Watson right now. The Texans quarterback has one year left on his contract plus a team option for 2021. Yet, at least one betting site has Watson a near favorite to open the 2021 season as Bill Belichick’s starting quarterback.

The uncertainty around Watson’s future seems to center around the disarray the Texans are in. Head coach Bill O’Brien is currently acting as the general manager and he was universally panned for last week’s trade that sent Watson’s top target, star receiver DeAndre Hopkins, to the Cardinals for running back David Johnson. The Texans also received a second-round pick in 2020 and a fourth-round pick in 2021 with a 2020 forth-rounder going back to the Cardinals.

As one NBC Sports columnist put it: “The Texans, however, are idiots.”

Still, Watson is a 24-year-old stud quarterback and the price for acquiring him in a trade would be high.

But, what about that tweet Watson sent?

Desperately searching for clues in cryptic tweets is another stage of NFL fandom that Patriots supporters may just now be fully becoming acquainted with.

Sure, those are lyrics from Drake’s “Emotionless,” but are they also a trade demand? The responses to this tweet featured plenty of cocky Bill Belichick GIFs and Watson photoshopped into a Patriots jersey. And led to a NESN headline, “Patriots Fans Lose Their Minds Over Deshaun Watson’s Cryptic Tweet.”

It could mean nothing, it could mean everything.

Welcome to the world of uncertainty most NFL fans deal with annually.
