A Florida prosecutor said on Sunday that he will fight against being fired by Gov. Ron DeSantis because he said he wouldn't enforce the state's ban on abortions after 15 weeks and because he backed gender-change treatments for minors.
Andrew Warren, a Democrat who was twice elected to be the state attorney for Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, was fired last week. On Sunday, he said in a Facebook video message and a news release that he wants his legal team to put up a "vigorous defense," but he didn't say what that meant.
On the video, Warren said, "I'm not going down without a fight." "I won't let this man step on your rights to say what you think, decide for yourself about your health care, and have your vote count."
Warren was suspended on Thursday by DeSantis, a Republican who is running for re-election in November and might run for president in 2024. DeSantis said that Warren didn't do her job and did other things that were against the law. The governor said that's because Warren signed statements with dozens of other prosecutors across the country promising not to bring criminal cases against people who want or give abortions or gender transition treatments.
Warren said on Sunday that the governor was basically trying to go against the will of the people who voted for him in 2016 and 2020 in the Tampa area.
