Over the weekend, thousands of pages of documents were unsealed in Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's bombshell defamation case. These documents included text messages between the actor and Marilyn Manson and an apparent attempt by his team to bring up his ex-'brief wife's stint as an exotic dancer' at trial.
The court documents, which were made public online and checked by The Post, show how lawyers from both sides worked behind the scenes to get certain claims heard by the jury in Fairfax, Virginia.
In a 965-page document filed on March 28, Heard explains why she disagrees with a number of motions made by Depp's lawyers, such as one to keep his medical history out of the trial and others that ask for potentially damaging information about the actress to be shown.
Lawyers for the star of "Aquaman" said Depp was trying to bring up "Amber Heard's sister Whitney's reality show video" and "Whitney and Amber's past romantic relationships" in a way that wasn't appropriate, according to the filing.
Depp also wanted to tell the jury about "Amber's brief stint as an exotic dancer years before she met Mr. Depp," her lawyers wrote. They also opposed "Mr. Depp trying to frivolously and maliciously suggest or imply that Ms. Heard was once an escort."
The documents also showed new text messages between Depp and rocker Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner and who has been accused of sexual abuse and grooming, including by his ex-girlfriend Evan Rachel Wood, whom he sued for defamation in March.
In a text message from 2016, Manson is said to have written "I got an Amber 2.0" and "Lindsay just put an Amber on me... please delete"
Depp says, "I've read a lot about that and sociopathic behavior...
It's for real, my brother! My ex-c—t is goddamn TEXTBOOK!!!" based on what the document says.
Then, in what seems to be a reference to a 2016 incident in which police were called to Depp and Heard's shared apartment in Los Angeles, Manson wrote, "I got a serious police amber situation with L's family. I'm fucking stressing. "I don't know if you're back, but I need refuge somewhere because I think the police might be coming for me," the filing says.
Heard's lawyers said that Depp and Manson went on "drug binges" together, including in the days before the actress arrived in Australia and the two got into a fight that became famous because the actor lost the tip of his right middle finger.
In the filings, there is also a long list of accusations that Heard's lawyer, Elaine Bredehoft, says she couldn't ask Depp's former agent, Tracey Jacobs, about, such as the actor having "lied to the LAPD."
"Mr. Depp appeared on TV drunk and high, so much so that Disney studio executives called Ms. Jacobs and asked, 'What the hell was wrong with your client?'" says a document. This was on the list of "relevant and damaging information" that was kept out of court. In the filing, it is not clear what alleged appearance the lawyer was talking about.
Heard's team also said that "these same problems came up during the filming of Pirates 5," and that Disney told Ms. Jacobs that the behavior wasn't "going to be tolerated," that Disney wasn't "going to put up with this," and that "given the Pirates 5 situation, there was no love between Johnny and Disney."
Depp's relationship with Disney was a big part of the trial. Depp's lawyers said that Heard's false accusations cost him tens of millions of dollars in future "Pirates of the Caribbean" earnings, while Heard's team said that Disney dropped Depp because of how he behaved.
Lawyers for the actor said that Heard's team was giving misleading evidence by saying that Bredehoft "could have kept questioning Ms. Jacobs for another three hours, but chose not to do so."
Documents also show how Depp's lawyers tried to keep out testimony about the actor's arrests and other cases that were still going on, like a lawsuit that was settled in July and accused him of assault.
His lawyers, who won their case, said that "it will serve no purpose other than to prejudice him in front of the jury" and that Heard would use it to "proffer evidence that portrays Mr. Depp as a violent man."
The jury gave Depp $10.35 million because he said that Heard's claims of domestic abuse in an op-ed piece hurt his reputation. She got $2 million because she said that Depp's lawyer said things about her that were not true and hurtful.
In an interview with NBC News after the jury's decision, Heard said she was upset that some evidence wasn't allowed in, like "a binder full of years of notes from the beginning of my relationship in 2011 that were taken by my doctor when I told him about the abuse."
"How could they make a decision? How could they not come to that conclusion?" Heard asked, referring to the evidence that was kept from the jury.
Heard's representatives didn't respond to a request for comment. Depp's reps did not comment.
