Ousted Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton offered a solid one-liner Friday night while talking about his former team as an NHL draft analyst for ESPN.

Gorton’s replacement, Chris Drury, traded 20-goal scorer Pavel Buchnevich for bottom-six forward Sammy Blais and a 2022 second-round pick earlier Friday. He then drafted winger Brennan Othmann with the No. 16 overall pick in the first round. Rugged former Lightning forward Barclay Goodrow also was acquired and signed to a six-year, $21.85 million contract.

“I don’t know, you might have heard a rumor that the Rangers are trying to play a little harder,” Gorton quipped during the ESPN broadcast.

Over the last couple years, Gorton’s Rangers teams were criticized for not having enough toughness, leading Drury to make the aforementioned moves.

Fired team president John Davidson also was interviewed during the show. Davidson and Gorton were axed together on May 5, with Drury – the former assistant GM – taking over both roles.
