The Mets’ top pitching prospect has been dealt a serious blow.
Just as he was set to begin his first full season of professional baseball, Matt Allan will be undergoing Tommy John surgery to repair a partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament, the Mets announced Friday.
The Mets said the surgery will be done “in the coming weeks,” after an MRI and physical exam earlier this week revealed the UCL tear, confirmed by the team’s medical director, Dr. David Altchek.
The 20-year-old right-hander, whom the Mets drafted as a third-round coup in 2019, had impressed in his first big-league spring training this year. Just last week, he said he was feeling “dominant” as he prepared to begin the minor league season with High-A Brooklyn.
Instead, Allan has surgery and a long road to recovery in his future.
