Brett Favre, who had a similarly dramatic send-off from the Packers as Rodgers was preparing to take over back in 2008, predicted Wednesday that his one-time successor has played his last downs with the Packers.
“I think I know Aaron fairly well, and honestly I just don’t see him coming back and just saying, ‘All right, let’s just bury the hatchet, whatever caused the rift, and I’m just going to come back and play because I love the guys, I love the Green Bay fans’ – I assume he does – but his rift isn’t with the fans or the players,” Favre said on ESPN’s “Wilde & Tausch” radio show in Wisconsin. “It’s with the front office. Will he just swallow his pride and come in? Maybe. But I don’t see that happening.
“If there’s not a trade, my gut tells me that he’d rather sit out than play. That’s just my gut. There’s no reason for me to say that other than that’s what my gut’s telling me, and I think you guys know Aaron fairly well enough to sort of feel the same way.”
Rodgers, 37, has made his frustrations known with the Packers front office, notably GM Brian Gutekunst, who traded up in the first round to draft his replacement in Jordan Love during the 2020 NFL Draft. Rodgers won’t return to the team as long as Gutekunst is employed, according to multiple reports.
Favre’s messy falling out with the Packers originally began with him retiring, but he was reinstated not long after. Packers GM at the time Ted Thompson then refused to outright release Favre, and ended up trading him to the Jets for a conditional fourth-round pick. He played one season there and then two more for the Packers’ division-rival Vikings.
Rodgers reportedly would be interested in moving to the Broncos, 49ers or Raiders, though he has not formally requested a trade.
