The Jets’ Sam Darnold era is over.
They are trading the quarterback to the Carolina Panthers for draft picks, the team announced on Monday. The Jets will receive a 2021 sixth-round pick, a 2022 second-round pick and 2022 fourth-round pick.
Momentum has been building toward the Jets selecting BYU quarterback Zach Wilson with the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Darnold, 23, was the No. 3 pick in the 2018 draft.
“I want to publicly acknowledge the commitment, dedication, and professionalism Sam displayed while with the Jets. He is a tough-minded, talented football player whose NFL story has not been written yet,” Jets GM Joe Douglas said in a statement. “While all these things are true, this move is in the short- and long-term best interests for both this team and him. We thank Sam for all of his work on behalf of this organization and wish him well as he continues his career.”
Darnold, who is reunited with former Jets receiver Robby Anderson with the Panthers, finishes his three-season Jets career with 8,097 passing yards, 45 touchdowns, 39 interceptions and a 78.6 QB rating.
The Jets play at Carolina next season.
