The 2021 NFL Draft is still weeks away, but things are already getting shaken up.
On Friday, the Miami Dolphins traded the No. 3 overall pick to the San Francisco 49ers for the No. 12 overall pick, a 2021 third-rounder and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023, according to multiple reports.
The third-round pick acquired by the Dolphins originally belonged to the Jets, but was compensation for Robert Saleh’s hiring.
The draft is quarterback-heavy at the top, with Trevor Lawrence expected to go No. 1 overall to the Jaguars. The Jets hold the second pick and are eyeing multiple pass-throwers; a contingency is attending BYU’s Zach Wilson’s pro day on Friday. Justin Fields, Mac Jones and Trey Lance are also likely first-round picks.
Per ESPN, the 49ers have no intention of trading QB Jimmy Garoppolo, though the team moving up into position to snag a young arm will only churn that rumor mill more.
While the 49ers will have more questions coming, the Dolphins wasted no time trading their way back into the top 10 for the April 21 festivities. Miami acquired the No. 6-overall pick along with No. 156 from the Eagles for the Dolphins’ recently acquired No. 12-overall pick, No. 123, and a 2022 first-rounder.
