PORT ST. LUCIE – Carlos Carrasco’s slow spring training has decelerated even further.
After throwing in a simulated game Monday, the Mets right-hander informed team officials of elbow soreness and will be shut down from throwing for “a few days,” according to manager Luis Rojas. Carrasco still has not appeared in a Grapefruit League game this spring.
Rojas said Carrasco indicated to him the discomfort isn’t new for him – he experienced it previously in spring training during his Cleveland tenure.
The 33-year-old Carrasco has not received an MRI exam, according to Rojas. The Mets’ plan calls for him to rest, play catch at some point and then pitch in a simulated game late next week.
But that schedule puts into question whether Carrasco will be ready to start the regular season. Rojas mentioned Jordan Yamamoto, Jerad Eickhoff, David Peterson and Jonathan Lucchesi as pitchers with major league experience who provide rotation depth.
Carrasco was late beginning workouts with the team after receiving extra medical evaluation this spring – he’s in remission from leukemia – and receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
