The Knicks stockpiled two more 2023 second-round picks by trading for Utah Jazz big man Ed Davis and agreeing to pay the $5 million left on his contract, according to sources.
The Knicks now have compiled three 2023 second-rounders since Wednesday after trading the 33rd pick to the Clippers on draft night for a 2023 second-rounder via Detroit.
Why the obsession? High school players will be permitted in that draft. Hence, the Knicks can draft a player and stash him in the G-League and make it a real minor league. They also have two first-rounders in 2023 —one from the Mavericks in the Kristaps Porzingis trade.
The veteran Davis, 31, had a disappointing season for the Jazz and averaged just 1.8 points in 28 games with a series of nagging injuries. He’s still considered a good leader and had a nice run with the Nets. Knicks assistant general manager Walter Perrin was part of the brain trust that brought Davis to Utah and feels it was just an off year. The journeyman was the 13th pick in 2010.
The Knicks can make such moves and slide Davis’ contract into their cap space. They may also waive him.
