Barack Obama tops wife Michelle’s first-day book sales record

“A Promised Land” sold 887,000 copies in its first 24 hours on sale, compared to 725,000 for "Becoming."

Barack Obama’s new memoir has a slight edge on wife Michelle’s record-breaking book when it comes to first-day sales.

His tome, “A Promised Land,” released Tuesday, sold an astonishing 887,000 copies in its first 24 hours on shelves. The number tops the 725,000 copies sold of the former first lady’s 2018 memoir, “Becoming,” on Day 1.

The Obamas signed a deal estimated to be worth over $60 million with Penguin Random House in 2017. Michelle’s book was the best-selling volume of 2018 and remained on the best-seller list for more than a year, with sales eclipsing 10 million by March 2019.
