The Jets claimed Ballentine off waivers Wednesday, a day after the Giants cut their 2019 sixth-round pick.

The Jets are desperate for help in their secondary, which gave up play after play Monday night to Cam Newton and the Patriots. Ballentine started the first two games of the season for the Giants before he was benched. He did not play a defensive snap in five of the last six games.

“He’s got to finish plays better,” Giants defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson said in September. “He’s had some opportunities to make plays and we just got to work on the finish of those plays and continue to grow him and get him better so in the future we’re looking back and he’s making those plays we need him to make.”

Ballentine is best known for an incident that happened hours after the Giants drafted him. He was shot while attending an off-campus party at Washburn University and one of his friends was killed in front of him.

The Jets also signed QB Mike White to the practice squad after cutting him Tuesday.
