Former ESPN host Bob Ley had some choice words for his former employer.
After the network informed employees early Thursday that it would lay off 300 people due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s financial strain on the company, while also not filling 200 currently open positions, Ley didn’t hold back while addressing the matter on Twitter.
“Trying to remain objective and unemotional as I learn of the ESPN team members laid off today,” said Ley, who retired in 2019. “Not possible. Not as I see countless decades of journalistic experience, and expertise jettisoned. Just when we need it most. Enjoy the DIS stock price and your NFL football.”
Ley, who was the longest-tenured on-air employee of the network at the time of his retirement, has always been outspoken since joining ESPN just three days after the network’s launch in 1979. When his ESPN co-workers were laid off back in 2017, Ley paid tribute to them on ‘Outside the Lines.’
