Odell Beckham Jr. tore his ACL in last Sunday’s Browns win over the Bengals, and it may be the last chapter of his career in Cleveland.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday morning that, “There’s a very real possibility that he has played his final game with the Cleveland Browns.”
The report points out that if the Browns want to move on from the three-time Pro Bowl receiver that it would likely be in an offseason trade rather than a release.
The 27-year-old Beckham tore his ACL on the Browns’ second offensive play against the Bengals last week, attempting to make a tackle after quarterback Baker Mayfield threw an interception that was intended for him. Cincinnati cornerback Darius Phillips made the interception and Beckham tried to chase him down before colliding into traffic and falling to the turf.
An MRI Monday confirmed the ACL tear in his left knee and that he would need surgery, and it appears the injury has been an emotional ordeal for Beckham.
“I really don’t have many words right now definitely not the right ones at least,” Beckham posted Friday on his Instagram story.
While the Browns have no long-term obligations to Beckham considering his contract is unguaranteed beyond 2021, $12.8 million of his 2021 salary is now guaranteed due to the injury. That could mean Cleveland will likely prefer to trade him rather than release him outright.
Beckham would be on his third team in four seasons if the Browns opt to move on from the All-Pro receiver. The Giants traded him to the Browns in March 2019 for safety Jabrill Peppers and Cleveland’s 2019 first- and third-round picks.
With 23 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns for the Browns so far this season, Beckham has also rushed three times for 72 yards and a touchdown.
