The NFL’s Washington franchise is making progress at changing their name – sort of.
“Effective immediately, Washington will call itself the ‘Washington Football Team,’ pending adoption of a new name,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted Thursday morning. “This is not a final renaming and rebranding for the team, this is the name it wants to use until pending adoption of a new name in the future.”
Washington will reportedly keep the placeholder name for the entire 2020 season, though it will not be permanent. They will have uniforms that feature gold uniforms on its helmets. The team updated it’s Twitter account to reflect the change.
The team formerly known as the Redskins announced they would be changing their name in July, after major sponsors such as FedEx, Nike and PepsiCo threatened action that would have cost the team hundreds of millions in advertising revenue. The change comes after years of protests over the offensive slur, as well as resistance from owner Dan Snyder to make a change.
