The Post has learned Woodson was going to be named to David Fizdale’s staff back in 2018 but former Knicks president Steve Mills felt it was a bad idea and would give fans someone to rally behind if things went wayward, according to a source. Fizdale was an assistant under Woodson with the Hawks.

Tom Thibodeau is the top candidate for the Knicks job, according to sources, if team president Leon Rose move on from Mike Miller. The question is whether Woodson would be interested in joining Thibodeau’s staff.

Woodson told The Post back in 2018 he’d be interested in joining Fizdale but it never materialized. The Knicks will soon begin their coaching search now that it’s clear they are not part of the restart plan. SNY first reported Woodson is expected to get an interview.

“I don’t want to hide the fact I’d love to be back,’’ Woodson told The Post in 2018. I’d like to finish what I started. At the end of the day, you want to come to New York, based on my body of work there. I want it to be mutual. I want them to want me.”
