Newly added 49ers left tackle Trent Williams knows better than most how important stability is at quarterback.

Williams spent the first decade of his career with the Redskins and he said quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was one of the most enticing parts of coming to play for the San Francisco 49ers.

“I think Jimmy G is awesome,” Williams told The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on the RapSheet + Friends podcast. “I think he has proven that he’s a quarterback that you can win with. In this league, it’s just hard to find. Quarterback is the toughest position and I think that’s why you see the contracts where they are.

“Having a quarterback that you know is going to make the right read, the right throw, I think that has to allow Kyle (Shanahan), you know, give him a chance to sleep at night because just having a guy you know who won’t throw the game away for you. You put him in the best position possible. He’ll win.”

After longtime 49ers tackle Joe Staley retired following the 2019 season, Williams said he paid extra close attention to San Francisco as he searched for a ticket out of Washington. In his time with the Redskins, Williams protected Donovan McNabb, Rex Grossman Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins and Alex Smith.

“From being in my position, not having a lot of success in the league, having a good quarterback and having a kind of musical chairs back there, I know the importance of it,” Williams said. “So I’m extremely happy just to be part of an offense that really don’t need me to win. I (just) add to it.”

The 2020 season will be Williams’ 11th in the NFL and first with the 49ers. A seven-time Pro Bowler, Williams experienced complications from a surgical procedure done last April to remove a growth from his head that was diagnosed as dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. He did not report to the team’s mandatory mini-camp and demanded to be released or traded over how the team’s medical staff handled the situation.
