The New England Patriots didn’t select a quarterback during NFL Draft 2020, but they’ve added yet another signal-caller to their roster since it ended.

As the Patriots move on from the 20-year Tom Brady era, they signed on Sunday undrafted free agent Brian Lewerke out of Michigan State, his agent Mike McCartney announced.

Lewerke, 23, was a three-year starter for the Spartans. As a senior in 2019, he had 3,079 yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. As a sophomore, Lewerke had 20 touchdowns against seven interceptions.

He becomes the latest piece to the Patriots’ quarterback puzzle in the wake of Brady signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They reportedly also agreed to terms with undrafted free-agent J’Mar Smith of Louisiana Tech.

Bill Belichick said after the draft completed that the team not picking a quarterback “wasn’t by design.”

Jarrett Stidham, a fourth-round pick from last year’s NFL Draft, seems to have the inside track at taking over for Brady. The Patriots also brought back veteran Brian Hoyer as a potential stopgap who can aid Stidham’s development.
