The world wanted the Dolphins to tank for Tua.
They didn’t, but they landed the star quarterback that comes with an injury risk anyways.
After all the pre-draft talk about Tua Tagovailoa’s health and potentially sliding down the first round, the Dolphins drafted the Alabama lefty with the No. 5 pick of the NFL Draft on Thursday night.
Tagovailoa spent the pre-draft process trying to prove to teams he was healthy again after dislocating his hip in November and requiring surgery. It was just the latest addition to his injury history, which reportedly had some teams concerned about picking him early.
Tagovailoa was once considered a potential No. 1 pick in the draft before his injury, but that honor went to LSU’s Joe Burrow, who went to the Bengals. Oregon’s Justin Herbert was the other quarterback whom many had pegged to go in the top-10 picks and the Chargers quickly followed by taking him with the No. 6 pick.
Earlier on Thursday, an independent evaluator and hip specialist told ESPN that Tagovailoa’s x-rays looked “pristine.”
