Almost two and a half years after Jeffrey Tambor was accused of sexual misconduct, the former “Transparent” star is again apologizing for his actions.
“Regarding how I left [‘Transparent’] I just want to make it really, really clear for your listeners out there that I’m not this guy. I in no way ever, ever intended to make anyone feel uncomfortable,” Tambor, 75, said on Gilbert Gottfried’s Colossal Show on SiriusXM.
Tambor — who starred as Maura Pfefferman, a transgender divorced parent of three in the groundbreaking series — left in the wake of the allegations.
“It was a set like no other,” he said, praising the cast of the show. “And, uh, there had to be, of course, instances where my interaction would be with these lovely people, could have been mistaken way other than how I intended. And I have profoundly apologized and I apologize now.”
The “Arrested Development” actor continued, “If I made anyone, anyone feel vulnerable and I’m sorry. I’m sorry it ended the way it did, but I just wanted to say, you know, I have to say it, I’m so proud of playing Maura and part of the LGBT community and getting that important message, out and it’s a highlight of my life and I just can’t let the day go short and I can’t leave this studio without saying something.”
In November 2017, at the height of the #MeToo movement, the Emmy winner was accused of sexual misconduct by his former assistant Van Barnes and his “Transparent” co-star Trace Lysette. A third accuser, a makeup artist, came forward later that month with another allegation.
Barnes detailed the alleged misconduct during an interview with Megyn Kelly, saying that Tambor, along with inappropriate sexual comments, watched her sleep naked. Lysette also accused him of unwanted sexual statements, as well as pressing his body against hers in a sexually aggressive manner.
In a 2018 interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Tambor vigorously denied the claims, but did concede that he was “difficult on set. I drove myself and my cast mates crazy. Lines got blurred.”
Around the same time, in an interview for Netflix’s “Arrested Development” reboot, his co-star Jessica Walter revealed that he had verbally harassed her.
“He never crossed the line on our show with any, you know, sexual whatever,” she told the New York Times. “Verbally, yes, he harassed me, but he did apologize … In like almost 60 years of working, I’ve never had anybody yell at me like that on a set.”
