New Jets wide receiver Breshad Perriman believes the end of the 2019 season was just the beginning for him.
Perriman had a monster finish for the Buccaneers last year. In their final five games, he caught 25 passes for 506 yards and five touchdowns. It was the most production he has shown in five years in the NFL. That helped him snag a one-year contract worth up to $8 million from the Jets in free agency.
“I think that was just a sneak peek of what’s to come for this season and for many other seasons past this season,” Perriman said. “I just feel like that was a tiny glimpse and I’m looking forward to building from that little run I had last season.”
The Jets signed Perriman after watching Robby Anderson depart for the Panthers. Anderson got a two-year, $20 million deal to rejoin his college coach, Matt Rhule. The Jets believe Perriman can replace the speed element Anderson gave their offense the past few years.
Perriman said he still believes he is as fast as he was when he came out of Central Florida in 2015 and was clocked in the 40-yard dash at 4.24 and by one scout at 4.19.
The Ravens drafted him in the first round in 2015. He never panned out for the Ravens and has played for the Browns and Buccaneers in the past two years. Perriman, 26, said he believes he is ready for a breakout season.

“I believe it’s going to happen now just knowing coach [Adam] Gase,” Perriman said. “He’s definitely an offensive-minded coach. You see that the receivers that he’s had and the numbers that they put up in his system, I have no doubt in my mind that this is going to be definitely a season to remember for me, as far as production-wise. I’m just really excited at the opportunities that I will get just being in an offense and being in a bigger role.”
Jets general manager Joe Douglas was still a scout for the Ravens in 2015 and is familiar with Perriman from that time.
“He has a unique size and speed combo,” Douglas said this week. “Obviously, his career trajectory was different than most first-rounders. I think you’ve seen it in the back half of two years ago with Cleveland and then at the end of this year. You’d be hard-pressed to find a receiver who had better numbers than Breshad. I’m really excited about his speed, his ability to take the top off the defense. I feel like he can come in here and make an impact. I feel like he’ll be able to develop chemistry with Sam [Darnold] moving forward.”
The Jets had the 32nd ranked offense in the NFL last season. Perriman is eager to give the Jets a jolt and silence any doubters who think his hot finish to 2019 was just a fluke.
“I bring a lot of speed, a lot of big-playmaking ability to this team,” Perriman said. “I’ve got nothing but respect for Robby. I know he had a great career as far as with the Jets. I know that what I bring to the table is going to be great as well. I’m ready and eager to meet my teammates and get to work and prove the [to the fans] that have any doubt in their mind wrong.”
