San Diego Comic-Con is going ahead as planned — amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“To our amazing Comic-Con and WonderCon fans: We understand how difficult the current climate has been for all of us and appreciate your continued support through these trying times. No one is as hopeful as we are that we will be able to celebrate #SDCC2020 together come July,” the convention wrote on its official Twitter account on Wednesday.

The pop culture event is slated for July 23 to 26 at the San Diego Convention Center. It’s one of the largest fan events in the country, regularly drawing crowds of over 130,000 visitors from all over the world.

The spread of COVID-19 has caused worldwide shutdowns and cancellations, with many states issuing orders to shelter in place and only operate essential businesses. Everything from the NBA season to Hollywood productions to the Olympics has been put on hold while humanity battles the highly contagious virus. Reportedly, a vaccine will take up to a year or more to develop, putting it well past July.

The Javits Center, where New York Comic-Con is scheduled for Oct. 8 to 12, has for now been turned into a temporary hospital.

“As we continue to monitor the situation with local authorities, we will post updates on our social channels!” SDCC tweeted. “Until then, remember: ‘A hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.’ — Christopher Reeve.”
