The Jets are not in the market for a starting quarterback, but could be looking for a developmental quarterback on Day 3 of the draft.

Sam Darnold is entering Year 3 with the Jets and there are still question marks about his future, but the Jets are happy with the 22-year-old and his starting job is secure.

The Jets agreed to a one-year deal with David Fales on Tuesday to be Darnold’s backup, and Mike White, who was on the practice squad last season, is the third quarterback under contract.

It is always a good idea to have a developmental quarterback on the roster. This would be a quarterback the Jets don’t believe is a starter but can be developed into being a long-term backup for Darnold.

Former Packers general manager Ron Wolf had a philosophy of drafting a quarterback every year. His belief was that you attacked the position with volume, hoping you hit on a few.

The Jets have whiffed in this area of the draft in recent years. Greg McElroy, Tajh Boyd, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg were all quarterback draft picks who did not pan out.

It is hard to know exactly which quarterbacks will make it to the late rounds, but Colorado’s Steven Montez, Iowa’s Nate Stanley and Florida International’s James Morgan are some possibilities.

For Jets GM Joe Douglas, this is going to be a question of whether drafting a quarterback is a luxury he can afford. The Jets have so many holes on their roster that Douglas may still be focusing on filling needs late in the draft rather than looking for potential project quarterbacks.

The Jets are two years removed from taking a quarterback No. 3 overall, so the organization’s hope is that quarterback won’t be a high priority for them for a long, long time.
