Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien was already on the hot seat for trading star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Cardinals before his reputation got even worse, as Michael Irvin claimed Hopkins said O’Brien compared a meeting with Hopkins to one he had with the late convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez.
Things reached a boiling point for the six-year Texans head coach and first-year general manager when Jaelen Strong, Houston’s third-round pick from the 2015 NFL Draft, blamed O’Brien for the derailment of his football career.
“This is who Bill O Brien is,” Strong tweeted. “Y’all thought it was my fault I wasn’t seeing the field. The man simply didn’t like me because I was a product of my environment. PERFORMANCE means nothing. He wasted my first 3 years ultimately ruining my NFL career. I never knew how to kiss ass.”
Strong, who played for O’Brien and the Texans from 2015 to part of 2017, hasn’t played in the NFL since December 2017. He accumulated 14 catches for 161 yards and three touchdowns in his rookie season in Houston and 14 catches for 131 yards the following season.
In 2016, Strong suffered a serious ankle sprain that kept him out the next five weeks before the Texans placed him on injured reserve. The Arizona State product was then suspended the first game of the 2017 season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substance Abuse.
The Texans put Strong on waivers in September 2017 and he was picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he played just one game in which he recorded three catches for 38 yards and a touchdown before suffering a season-ending ACL tear. The Jaguars released him in April the following year.
Strong was signed by the Cleveland Browns in February of last year before the organization released him six months later.
