After announcing his departure from the Patriots, the future Hall of Fame quarterback is expected to sign with the Buccaneers in the coming days. As the details of his contract are ironed out, it seems the six-time Super Bowl champion went to bat for the troubled, out-of-work receiver.
“The word among teams interested in Tom Brady were among the impression that Brady wanted to bring Antonio Brown with him to a new team,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted on Wednesday. “Brown is still under investigation, and remains to be seen when he can play. But Brady is close with him.”
The alleged demand is odd in light of the striking dissimilarity between the two. Brady’s discipline, measured judgment and flawless public image over the last two decades are the antithesis of Brown, whose erratic behavior would pose a massive risk to any interested franchise.
After nine seasons with the Steelers, the seven-time Pro Bowler began the 2019 preseason as a member of the Raiders. A tumultuous summer, which included Brown burning his feet in a cryotherapy machine, led to Brown forcing his release from the Raiders. He then joined the Patriots on Sept. 7. A civil suit was filed on Sept. 10 alleging the 31-year-old wideout sexually assaulted his trainer former Britney Taylor, and he was cut from the Patriots on Sept. 20 after allegedly sending “intimidating text messages” to a second woman who had accused Brown of sexual misconduct.
Since then, the fallen star has made headlines for odd social media posts and brushes with law enforcement. Brown was arrested on Jan. 24 for battery and felony burglary following an altercation with a delivery truck driver.
Still, the pair seem to have developed a relationship since Brown’s one-game tenure with the Patriots. On Jan. 29, Brown posted a photo to Instagram of Brady and himself during that game together that was captioned, “Want to play more than ever 2020 wherever @tombrady go #BeEncouraged.”
Brady, 42, connected with Brown for four completions for 56 yards and a touchdown.
Brown has made some impassioned pleas for forgiveness since his release from the Patriots, but the contrite social media posts are far outnumbered by the acrimonious and bitter ones.
The NFL’s investigation of Brown is ongoing.
