The forecast for Tom Brady’s future in New England is getting bleaker.
As of noon Monday, the Patriots will no longer be the only team that is eligible to negotiate with the four-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback as he heads into the first NFL free agency of his career. ESPN reported Sunday that Brady “does not have anything close to a deal in New England yet.”
Sports Illustrated reported at the beginning of March that Brady was open to returning to the Patriots under certain terms, while coach Bill Belichick was open to bringing him back as well. However, ESPN said the Patriots actually extended an offer to Brady back in August and are now waiting for their 20-year quarterback to initiate further discussions.
The Titans were thought to be a potential landing spot for the 42-year-old Brady because of his known relationship with Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel, who was a linebacker in New England from 2001 to 2008. But the Titans made their choice by signing QB Ryan Tannehill to a four-year, $118 million deal on Sunday.
The 49ers have also chosen to stick with Jimmy Garoppolo over Brady, leaving the Buccaneers as the primary competition for the Patriots. The Raiders and Chargers could also be in the mix.
