CBS promotes a study that says climate change is to blame for rising rates of childhood obesity

In a segment that was made fun of on Thursday, 'CBS Mornings' pushed a new study that linked climate change and warmer temperatures to higher rates of childhood obesity.

Co-host Nate Burleson talked about a study in the journal "Temperature" that said "climate change, especially warmer temperatures, is making our children less active and fatter."

Burleson said that the study found that kids were 30% less "aerobically fit" than their parents, and he said that was because kids couldn't exercise outside because it was too hot.

Even though the segment was mostly about climate change, Burleson did say that technology probably had something to do with the rise in childhood obesity.

"Listen, it's been a lot hotter and the weather has been crazy, but I think it has something to do with technology, you know. Burleson said, "It's one thing to not go outside, but these kids don't go outside because they can stay inside and talk on their phones, play video games, and hang out with their friends without having to go outside."

Several people on Twitter, on the other hand, criticized the segment for focusing on "climate change" as a cause of childhood obesity without also mentioning coronavirus lockdowns.

"Do you think that... no, that can't be. "Must be the climate change," joked Bethany Mandel, who writes for the Deseret News.

Hans Mahncke, co-host of "Truth Over News" on EpochTV, tweeted, "They made kids fat by closing schools, playgrounds, parks, and beaches. They are now blaming "climate change," which was to be expected. If the fraudsters who pushed lockdowns don't face harsh punishments, it will happen again."

"Change in climate? "Ffs," wrote Claude Thompson, a writer for the National Review.

Nan Hayworth, a former member of Congress, tweeted, "NO. NO. NO. Climate change is NOT one of the reasons why kids aren't as fit as they could be. This is propaganda that CBS, along with the rest of "mainstream" media, spreads to scare Americans into accepting government action against the "climate apocalypse" at any cost!

Joe Gabriel Simonson, a reporter for the Washington Free Beacon, said that "CBS Mornings" lied about the study to push a climate agenda.

“[T]his seemed too insane even for left-wing climate scientists so I read the study summary. the authors don’t blame climate change for children getting fatter, but that fat children may have a harder time dealing with climate change because fat people don’t do as well in the heat,” Simonson tweeted.

A study published in July by the National Library of Medicine found that during coronavirus lockdowns, "significant weight gain was reported by the majority of subjects." This was especially true for people who already had weight problems.

It concluded, “Data analysis clearly demonstrated the detrimental impact of COVID-19 lockdown on children and adolescents’ body weight and BMI, children with pre-existing overweight/obesity being more at risk of gaining weight.”
