'We're all Queer,' says Marvel director Taika Watiti in response to people who say 'Thor: Love and Thunder' is 'too gay'

Taika Watiti, the director of Disney's Marvel's Thor: Love and Thunder, slammed critics who say that the latest superhero movie is 'too gay' by saying, 'We're all queer' to explain his recent focus on LBGTQ stories and characters.

Waititi told Out magazine that he doesn't care about the criticism that his recent movies and TV shows are too "gay." He thinks that everyone is gay, it's just a matter of how gay they are.

“We’re all queer,” he insisted, adding, “Just to varying degrees of where we are on the spectrum, I think. I think, innately, humans have all got some degree of queerness in them.”

When the trailer for the second Thor movie came out in April, many fans were surprised by how much pro-LGBT content it showed. Some people said that the movie looked "gay as hell."

Sure enough, the movie shows a lot of queer people. John Nolte of Breitbart said that this makes the new Thor "kind of woke and kind of stinky." The movie's second weekend sales were one of the worst drops in recent Marvel history.

But Waititi doesn't feel bad about how much LGBTQ content he put into the latest superhero blockbuster.

“With Thor, it’s great to be able to finally get Tessa’s character, and my character as well, where we’re both queer,” the director said.

He was also thrilled that his gay friends were excited by the movie.

“I mean, I’m just amazed to hear what my friends think of me. I’ll be like, ‘Hey guys, you’re looking at a little gay icon over here,’ and it feels really amazing,” he exclaimed.

Waititi also said that there were other scenes with gay themes that were filmed but didn't make it into the final movie. But he then said that he was sad that there wasn't enough gay sex in the movie. He said that he wished he had filmed Tessa Thompson's character Valkyrie kissing a woman.

Waititi also recently wrote, directed, and starred in Our Flag Means Death, an HBO Max series about gay pirates. The ten-episode series eased people into the LGBTQ theme, but it didn't take long before there were full-on gay relationships.

The pirate show has been given a second season.
