Climate protesters in the UK stick themselves to paintings in art galleries

Tuesday, people protesting climate change stuck themselves to a copy of Leonardo da Vinci's 'The Last Supper' at London's Royal Academy of Arts and sprayed 'No New Oil' next to it.

Supporters of the group "Just Stop Oil" set up the protest. It happened a day after two members of the group were arrested for gluing themselves to the frame of John Constable's "The Hay Wain" in London's National Gallery.

On Tuesday, five activists went to the Royal Academy and put a hand on the frame of a full-size copy of Leonardo da Vinci's famous 15th-century painting "The Last Supper."

The Metropolitan Police said that three men and two women were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. The Royal Academy said that the gallery room was closed to the public and that police were called "at the request of the protesters."

The group "Just Stop Oil," which wants the government to stop giving licenses for new oil and gas projects, has held a number of protests over the past week that have gotten a lot of attention.

Two activists were arrested on Monday after they covered Constable's 1821 painting "The Hay Wain" with large sheets of paper showing "an apocalyptic vision of the future." Then, they all put their hands on the oil painting's frame and protested as security guards led tourists and a group of schoolchildren out of the room.

The National Gallery said that the painting's frame had "minor damage" and that the varnish on the painting's surface had been "disturbed," but both problems were fixed and the painting was put back up.

On Sunday, activists from the group "Just Stop Oil" sat down on the track during a break in the Formula One race at Silverstone in southern England. This caused a lot of trouble.

Six people were charged with planning to cause a public nuisance at the race, according to the police.
