You can never have too many players who know the new head coach.

The Jets signed defensive end Ronald Blair on Tuesday, according to ESPN, a player with ties to Robert Saleh from their days together with the 49ers.

Blair, 28, has not played in the NFL since 2019.  He tore his anterior cruciate ligament midway through that season and spent 2020 on the physically unable to perform list.

A 2016 fifth-round draft pick out of Appalachian State, Blair appeared in 47 games for the 49ers, with only two starts.  He has 13.5 career sacks, including 5.5 in 2018, and 27 quarterback hits and 22 tackles for loss.

Blair was released by the 49ers in March. Blair had knee complications following the ACL tear and required a second surgery in October. NBC Sports reported that Blair appeared set to re-sign with the 49ers in April, but a deal never came to fruition after a meeting with team doctors.

He will be well-versed in what Saleh wants to install and run on defense in his first year with the Jets, which could give him an advantage in his quest to make the roster.

Pass rusher was a position of need for the Jets this offseason. They added defensive end Carl Lawson from the Bengals on a three-year, $45 million in free agency.
