ARLINGTON, Texas — When Jameson Taillon gave up three runs in the bottom of the third inning on Tuesday, it was hardly a given the Yankees would come back.
Playing without Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks and Gleyber Torres, the bottom half of the Yankees’ lineup was hardly fear-inducing.
But they helped key a five-run third inning to propel the Yankees to a 7-4 win over the Rangers at Globe Life Field.
Though DJ LeMahieu delivered the go-ahead double, it was set up earlier in the inning, as Miguel Andujar followed a Gary Sanchez RBI double with a run-scoring single to tie the game.
A long single by Mike Ford and a walk by Ryan LaMarre against right-hander Mike Foltynewicz loaded the bases for LeMahieu.
LeMahieu’s double off Kolby Allard gave the Yankees a lead they wouldn’t give up — even after Taillon was knocked out in the fifth for a second straight outing.
The right-hander allowed a leadoff double to Willie Calhoun in the first and was bailed out by Brett Gardner later in the inning, when the center fielder chased down a long fly ball by Nate Lowe near the fence in left-center for the second out. And Joey Gallo popped out to end the inning.
In the second, Taillon got some help from Rougned Odor, in his first game back from a sprained left knee, when he made an excellent stop on a hard grounder by Isiah Kiner-Falefa and started an inning-ending double play.
The Yankees fell behind in the third. Jonah Heim hit a one-out double to right-center. With two out, Sanchez caught Heim napping off second base and nearly picked him off. After initially ruling Heim out, replay showed Odor’s tag was just late, which prolonged the inning.
Former Yankees prospect Nick Solak made his old organization pay, drilling a 3-2 pitch to left for an RBI single and the game’s first run.
Walks to Lowe and Gallo loaded the bases for Adolis Garcia, who hit a two-run single up the middle to make it 3-0.
Taillon struck out David Dahl to finally end the 33-pitch inning.
The Yankees stormed back with five runs in the fourth.
Aaron Judge singled with one out and Gio Urshela drilled a double into the left-field corner, allowing Judge to score.
After Odor popped out, Sanchez doubled to left to drive in Urshela and get the Yankees to within a run.
Andujar then tied it up with a single to left, scoring Sanchez, who left the game with cramping in his left hamstring. It was Andujar’s first RBI in 27 plate appearances on the season.
Ford continued the barrage with a single off the wall in right, sending Andujar to third.
LeMahieu followed with a double past first base to score two more, as the Yankees batted around in the inning.
Taillon rebounded from his rough third with an eight-pitch fourth, but allowed a homer to Solak with one out in the fifth, ending his night with the Yankees holding a one-run lead.
The Yankees got some insurance in the sixth. Andujar laced his second single of the night to lead off and Ford walked. A deep fly ball to right by Ryan LaMarre sent Andujar to third, and LeMahieu drove him in with a sacrifice fly to the track in center.
A run-scoring groundout put the Yankees ahead by three runs and the bullpen made it hold up, as Wandy Peralta, Jonathan Loaisiga, Chad Green and Aroldis Chapman combined for 4 ²/₃ shutout innings.
