Few people in the NFL world have been impressed by the Jaguars' signing of Tim Tebow. Apparently, that even extends to the team's own building.
Few people in the NFL world have been impressed by the Jaguars’ signing of Tim Tebow to play tight end. Apparently, that even extends to inside the Jags’ building.
In a segment on ESPN’s “Get Up” Tuesday, Jeff Darlington reported that there is a “serious disagreement” within the building about signing the former Broncos QB-turned-Mets minor-league baseball player.
“There are coaches on that staff that don’t want to see it happen,” Darlington said. “There are also those who are saying, it’s not that big of a deal, he’s probably not going to be on the roster Week 1. To which you would say, why do it at all?”
Tebow will turn 34 in August. He hasn’t taken a regular-season NFL snap since the 2012 season, as a quarterback with the Jets. He was signed to play the tight end position, which he has never done professionally.

“Beyond the emotional side of this, is just the reality that it’s really not practical,” Darlington said. “It’s not likely to work. [Jacksonville head coach] Urban Meyer would say, I’m going to add anyone to my team who has the potential to better this organization. To which you could look at it and say, how is it going to better the organization? There’s just really not very much upside at all.”
It appears some inside the organization would agree, though Meyer is not one of them. He coached Tebow at Florida, and the two are neighbors in the Jacksonville area. It’s fair to wonder, however, if Meyer – who has never coached in the NFL before – may be alienating members of his staff just months into his tenure.
And it goes beyond just that – there are three rookie tight ends currently on the roster but likely fighting for a permanent gig. How would they feel when a guy 10 years older than they, who has a lucrative TV gig, who has never played the position they’ve played their whole lives, comes in and tries to take their roster spots?
“When he walks into that locker room, it’s going to be divided,” Mike Tannenbaum, who was GM for the Jets when they brought Tebow over in 2012, said on ESPN. “There are going to be huge supporters of his, and others are going to be like, what is he doing here as a 34-year-old backup tight end?”
