The Yankees lost another game to the Orioles to close out an eight-game road trip.
BALTIMORE — Split happens.
The Yankees lost another game to the lowly Orioles, 4-3 in 10 innings on Thursday at Camden Yards to close out an eight-game road trip.
Cedric Mullins scored Ramon Urias from third with a sacrifice fly to center off Jonathan Loaisiga to win it in the 10th.
Urias started the inning on second as the extra runner and was bunted over to third by Pat Valaika before Mullins won it with the fly ball, as Aaron Hicks’ throw sailed up the third base line.
The loss dropped the Yankees back into a last-place tie with the Orioles in the AL East.
In the top of the 10th, the Yankees couldn’t get extra runner Gio Urshela past second.
After Darren O’Day allowed a run in the bottom of the eighth that put Baltimore ahead 3-2, the Yankees rallied in the top of the ninth.
Mike Ford, pinch hitting for Clint Frazier, led off with a walk, and after Brett Gardner struck out looking, DJ LeMahieu drew another walk. Giancarlo Stanton, who hit the ball hard throughout the afternoon, struck out swinging before Gleyber Torres, ripped a two-out, 1-2 pitch for a ground-rule double to left-center to score Ford and tie the game.
The Yankees would have gone ahead if the ball hadn’t bounced over the fence, since LeMahieu would have been able to come home easily.
Urshela then lined out to short to end the inning.
Baltimore had taken the lead in the bottom of the eighth against O’Day.
The right-hander started the inning and allowed a leadoff single to Mullins and then a double to left-center to Austin Hays. Mullins came around to score the go-ahead run, with Hays moving to third on a throwing error by Gleyber Torres on the relay home, but O’Day got the next three batters to strand Hays.
Aroldis Chapman struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to send it to extra innings.
Jordan Montgomery pitched fairly well — although he started and finished slowly.
Montgomery’s first-inning issues continued.
After allowing three in the first in his previous outing in Cleveland, the left-hander gave up a run to Baltimore with Mullins leading off with a single, moving to second on a bunt by Hays and scoring when Trey Mancini singled to left.
The Yankees threatened for the first time against right-hander Jorge Lopez with two outs in the third.
Back-to-back singles to center by LeMahieu and Stanton were the first hits of the day for the Yankees, but Torres struck out looking.
They came up just short in the fourth. With one on and two out, Gary Sanchez laced a single to left, sending Hicks to second.
Frazier, who homered for the first time this season on Wednesday and lined out in his first at-bat, flied out to the wall in right.
After Pedro Severino started the bottom of the fourth with a single off the wall in right, Frazier made a diving catch of Ryan Mountcastle’s fly ball to shallow right.
Lopez entered the game with an ERA of 8.15 through four starts and left with two on and no one out in the fifth, as the Yankees caught a break when a close 3-2 pitch to LeMahieu was called a ball. Gardner, who snapped a 1-for-26 skid with a leadoff single, would have been thrown out attempting to steal second on the play.
Adam Plutko entered to face Stanton, who poked a single to right to load the bases for Torres.
Torres popped out to shallow right and Urshela chased a high fastball to whiff for the second out.
Fortunately for the Yankees, Rougned Odor was up next. Odor delivered yet another clutch hit with a sharp single to right that drove in Gardner and LeMahieu to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. It was his ninth hit as a Yankee — and fifth that has either tied the game or put the Yankees ahead.
But with Chad Green warming in the bullpen, the Yankees let Montgomery start the bottom of the sixth to face Mancini, who already had two hits off the left-hander. Mancini made them pay by leading off the inning with a homer to tie the game at 2-2.
Green then came on and retired all six batters he faced.
Urshela opened the eighth with a walk off lefty Paul Fry. Aaron Judge then pinch hit for Odor after sitting with lower-body soreness and struck out on three pitches. Fry got Hicks and Sanchez to end the inning.
