The Jets really must have been impressed by what they saw at Zach Wilson’s pro day.
With Monday’s trade of Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers for draft picks, the Jets clearly are all-in on selecting BYU quarterback Zach Wilson with the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Jets GM Joe Douglas, new head coach Robert Saleh and offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur ventured to Provo, Utah in late March to watch the 6-3 Wilson’s workout after he threw for 3,692 yards with 33 touchdowns and three interceptions in 12 games as a junior last season for the Cougars.
Former BYU star and Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young had said Friday that the Jets already were “recruiting” the 21-year-old Wilson’s family and “have committed to Zach” at No. 2.
The 49ers had moved up to No. 3 in the draft with the hope of taking Wilson, but they likely will have to choose between Ohio State’s Justin Fields, North Dakota State’s Trey Lance or Alabama’s Mac Jones if they want to take a quarterback at the slot.
