Giants add offensive line experience with free agent Zach Fulton

The Giants added playmakers on offense this offseason, most notably receiver Kenny Golladay and tight end Kyle Rudolph, but did not address their offensive line, until Thursday, when they signed Zach Fulton, a veteran guard likely to compete for a starting job.

Fulton, 29, has 107 games and 90 starts on his NFL resume. He started all 16 games at right guard for the Texans in 2020 and has 65 NFL starts at right guard in his seven-year career, the first four years with the Chiefs and the past three seasons with the Texans. The Giants have a vacancy at right guard, where Kevin Zeitler started the past two seasons before he was released March 11 in a salary dump that saved the Giants $12 million on the salary cap.

With Shane Lemieux heading into his second year and Will Hernandez moving into his fourth season, the Giants needed some experienced competition at guard. Lemieux as a rookie started nine games at left guard, first subbing for Hernandez when Hernandez missed two games on the COVID-19 list and later as the permanent replacement.  Lemieux is expected to compete to stay put as the starting left guard. Hernandez fell out of favor with the current Giants coaching staff and, with Fulton now on the roster, will have his work cut out for him to regain a starting role.

The Texans released Fulton on March 15, saving $3 million on the salary cap. In March of 2018, they signed Fulton to a four-year deal worth $28 million and he started 44 games the past three seasons. Fulton in his career also has 16 starts at left guard and nine starts at center. He played in 16 games four times in his seven years.

The 6-foot-5, 321-pound Fulton was a 2014 sixth round draft pick of the Chiefs out of Tennessee. He started all 16 games as a rookie.
